Chicks in with the others

The 'mixed brown egg layer' chicks I got last month thrived, grew faster than any others I have ever purchased and were in general so much superior to my spring order there is no comparison. The place I bought them from is a smaller hatchery, I think maybe there is more attention to detail and care of the birds.

Within five weeks they were really friendly and absolutely demanding for treats. My sister did most of their care this time and they rapidly became attached to her, cheeping loudly whenever she appeared.

At six weeks we moved them from their brooder into the hen yard, putting them into the much ignored chick-n-barn that I installed two new roosts into. They were so happy to be out of that crowded brooder, there was no stress at all. Fortunately we've had a very mild fall here and they have adapted well. Though the ground is covered with leaves and bits of straw, the chicks were dust bathing within a half-hour of being moved. Amazing how instinct works.

They are still very friendly and rush anyone who enters the yard, jumping onto your feet and if given a chance onto your hands if you have something good to eat.

Last night I sold six of them to a friend whose flock is getting older, I still have six or seven that I will need to find a home for. They can all fit in the barn comfortably but by the time they are laying they would be crowded in there. Of course, it would be warmer, too. ;-)
