Another solution for mating wear on hens

I got a response to my duct tape suggestion that's quite inventive

hen with extra large bandaid

Instead of Duck Tape, I use "Band-Aid Extra Large Tough-Strips". They are the tan colored fabric type and they blend well with the feather color of my Red Sex Links.

Also, the girls that are looking so rough have a 15 hens to 1 rooster ratio.

We have not started breeding yet. We are in the process of gathering material to build a pallet house to use as brooding quarters on one side and the other side will be the permanent living quarters for our meat bird breeding experiment. The Dels just came into lay 2 weeks ago. This week, we will be getting our new chicks... 30 Golden Comets & 30 California Whites for a new laying flock and then 15 Indian Game which will be raised to cross with the Delawares to hopefully produce a great foraging meat bird with ample meat. Just too unhappy with raising the typical meat type birds that lay around, in their poop, with their head in the feed bucket. Even though we move their pen daily, they still create a good amount of mess. A bit un-appetizing, if you know what I mean.

Keeping chicken litter from smelling requires dry conditions. Anytime moisture accumulates, it gets smelly. Check out the FAQ page for more information about dealing with bedding and controlling odors.
